Different Positions in the Merchant Navy

The Merchant Navy is divided into two main departments: the Deck Department (navigation, cargo handling, and overall ship management) and the Engine Department (maintenance, propulsion, and technical operations). Additionally, there are electrical engineers and catering staff who play vital roles onboard.


Deck Department

  • Captain (Master): The highest authority on the ship, responsible for overall command, navigation, safety, and management of the vessel and crew.
  • Chief Officer (First Mate): Assists the Captain, manages cargo operations, safety drills, and supervises deck crew.
  • Second Officer (Second Mate): Specializes in navigation, route planning, and communication systems.
  • Third Officer (Third Mate): Handles safety equipment, life-saving appliances, and assists in navigation duties.
  • Deck Cadet: A trainee officer undergoing sea training to qualify as an officer.
  • Bosun (Boatswain): Senior-most deck rating, supervises deck crew and maintenance work.
  • Pumpman: Specializes in cargo pumps, usually on tankers.
  • Able Seaman (AB): Skilled seafarer performing deck operations, maintenance, and watch duties.
  • Ordinary Seaman (OS): Entry-level deck crew, assisting with maintenance and learning practical seamanship.

Engine Department

  • Chief Engineer: Head of the Engine Department, responsible for the operation and maintenance of all machinery and engine systems.
  • Second Engineer: Supervises daily engine operations, machinery maintenance, and assists the Chief Engineer.
  • Third Engineer: Manages boilers, fuel systems, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Fourth Engineer: Responsible for air compressors, pumps, and engine room watch duties.
  • Junior Engineer: Entry-level officer, assists senior engineers in daily operations.
  • Engine Cadet: A trainee in the engine department, gaining practical experience.
  • Oiler & Greaser: Skilled engine crew who maintain lubrication and assist in machinery operations.
  • Junior Rating: General helpers in the engine department.

Catering Department

  • Catering Officer / Chief Steward: Manages food services, kitchen operations, and hospitality for crew and officers.
  • Cook: Prepares meals for the entire crew.
  • Steward: Assists in serving food and maintaining cleanliness in the galley and dining areas.

Electrical Department

  • Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) / Electrical Engineer: Manages electrical systems, electronic equipment, and automation onboard.
  • Electrical Cadet: A trainee learning to maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems.
